If one were able to deconstruct a painting into its distinct layers, they would observe an image composed of various painterly levels, each representing different stages of the artistic process. After the initial drawing is finished, the painting evolves through successive steps that refine and enhance its detail and accuracy. Following the completion of the drawing, the artist progresses to creating a rough outline of the image, which begins to establish volumes, lighting, and shadow, while still maintaining a somewhat coarse quality.
After completing the initial sketch, the next step involves applying the first layer of colors. This serves as an intermediate phase in the artwork where basic tones and colorations are established, although details are still lacking. Once this initial layer has dried, subsequent layers of paint are applied to further define the details, blend and deepen shadows, and brighten areas needing more light. This gradual process continues until the figure is refined and completed with precision.
